College seniors have lots to worry about as they begin this road to success.  One of the biggest worries is where to start.  Nobody wants to waste her time in a job that may lead nowhere–or is that not the case? The path to your dream job or favorite career can start with something that has seemingly nothing to do with what you aspire to achieve. It’s all about taking that first step. My first client Pat Riley in his keynote speeches used to always refer back to something his father taught him: Just take a step.

Don’t let the input of others sway you, because everyone is going to have a say in your every move.  You need to put those ear muffs on and just go. You may not know what you want to do career-wise yet, but every single step along the way will be a learning experience. Here’s the kicker: this step may be forward, it may be backward, it could even be sideways. It may land you waiting tables at a restaurant, running errands as an office assistant, or serving coffee at Starbucks. But whatever that step becomes, take it. Be proud of it. Work hard at it. And don’t regret it. Anything you choose will give you the ability to meet people, get a better understanding of the world around you, and help to add certainty to uncertain times. And at the very worst, its a resume builder! It’s a choice that will take you to a new level with new people and new goals. And someday you’ll look back at that step and realize you couldn’t have gotten here without having done that.
